Babies Have Sensitive Skin

Most people imagine silky smooth, plump, perfect skin when they hear baby skin. While baby skin is indeed beautiful, parents need to understand that a baby´s skin is very sensitive, rarely perfect, and very vulnerable to various irritants, allergens, and infections.

As a parent, follow these points to protect your baby´s smooth skin. The baby´s immune system which includes the skin, is still underdeveloped, and as a result, skin problems are quite common.

  • Always wash new clothing before your baby wears it. Your baby may be sensitive to some irritants that made its way onto the clothing during production, or at the retailer.
  • Use hypoallergenic detergents when washing baby clothes. This is especially important if you know that your baby has sensitive skin. If possible, use formulations that are designed for babies, as they tend to contain less irritants such as perfumes, and avoid harsh ingredients.
  • Change diapers frequently, and make sure that the baby´s bottom is not wet for a prolonged period of time. Infrequent diaper changes are one of the most common causes of rashes.
  • Your baby does not need a daily bath. Instead, wipe down the baby´s body using a soft wet-cloth. Frequent bathing can lead to drying and irritation of the skin.
  • Understand that most baby´s skins are not perfect. There is no need to panic if your baby develops a minor rash.
