Tips for Bathing Your New Baby

  1. Do not bathe your newborn until the stump of the umbilical cord has dried out, fallen off, and healed properly. Instead, use sponge baths, or wash your baby using a washing cloth with lukewarm water.
  2. Take special care to clean the baby´s face, hands, and genital areas, as these areas are most exposed to potential irritants such as food, saliva, urine, stool, and sweat.
  3. When the baby is very young, use a baby tub or a sink instead of a regular bath tub. A regular bath tub can be large and awkward for a small and slippery baby.
  4. Never leave your baby unsupervised in a bath. Never. A baby can drown even in shallow water, and this can happen very quickly.
  5. Watch the temperature. The ideal temperature is about 90 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), which is warm, but not hot. Babies have very sensitive, delicate skin. Exposure to hot water can burn a baby´s skin in a very short amount of time.
  6. Always turn off the tap when bathing your baby. The temperature of the water or the depth of the water can change very quickly and unexpectedly.
  7. Use mild soaps that do not contain fragrances. Common irritants like fragrances can easily hurt a baby´s delicate skin.
  8. Remember that not using soap is always an option.
  9. Use a gentle moisturizer or cream while your baby´s skin is still damp.
  10. Pat your baby down with a towel. Do not use a rubbing or scrubbing motion as this can dry out and irritate the baby´s skin.
