Baby cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis)

What is Cradle Cap?

Identifying Cradle Cap

Cradle cap, also called seborrheic dermatitis, is an extremely common condition that affects up to 50% of babies. The affected baby develops a scaly and waxy red rash on the scalp, eyebrows, and behind the ears. Unlike adult seborrheic dermatitis, the condition does not itch or otherwise bother the baby in most cases, and is, in the majority of cases, mild. The exact cause of cradle cap is unknown, however, it is speculated that the maternal hormones during late pregnancy have an effect on the baby´s sensitive skin, which induces over-activity of the sebaceous glands, causing cradle cap.

How to deal with cradle cap

In most cases, the baby will outgrow this condition by their first birthday, and no particular treatment is required if it does not bother the baby. For mild to moderate cases of cradle cap, home remedies such as applying petroleum jelly will help to remove scaling and dryness. Regular dandruff shampoos for adults should not be used unless specifically recommended by your pediatrician, as these products often contain irritants which may make the condition worse. In severe cases, consult your pediatrician for treatment advice.
